Ian is a classically trained fine artist and master goldsmith. Since founding Davidson Jewels in 1988, he has spent over 35 years at the bench, dedicating his career to ensuring clients never have to settle for a retail compromise.
As an early pioneer in 3D CAD design dating back to 1989, Ian blends classical hand-forging techniques with cutting-edge technology to bring even the most complex visions to life.

The Studio Consultation

The 3D Prototype
We print a physical, high-resolution resin replica of your ring. You come in, hold it, try it on, and request adjustments before it is cast.
The Workbench
Your ring is cast in precious metal and meticulously set by hand using traditional goldsmithing techniques right here in Calgary.
The Reveal
You return to the atelier to pick up the finished piece. The fit is perfect, the stone is breathtaking, and the piece is uniquely yours.

Custom commissions at Davidson Jewels start at $2,500, with most engagement rings falling between $3,000 and $15,000 depending on the center stone, metal, and complexity of the design. Heritage and high-jewellery commissions can range up to $50,000 and beyond. Ian provides a transparent written estimate before any work begins, so you always know what your ring will cost before committing.
How long does a custom ring take to make?
Most custom engagement rings take six to ten weeks from your first studio consultation to final pickup. The timeline includes the design phase, a 3D resin prototype for you to try on, casting in 18k gold or platinum, and hand-setting at the bench. Rush timelines are sometimes possible for proposals with firm dates — just mention it at your first appointment.
Do you work with my own diamond or heirloom stones?
Yes. Redesigning family jewellery and resetting heirloom diamonds is one of Ian's specialties — many clients bring inherited stones, old engagement rings, or gold from pieces that no longer suit them. Ian will assess your stones in the studio, discuss design options, and incorporate them into a new piece that carries the same meaning in a contemporary form.
What metals do you work in?
Davidson Jewels works exclusively in 18k gold and platinum. This includes 18k white, yellow, and rose gold, as well as our exclusive cedar gold alloy. We do not work in 14k or lower-karat metals because we believe heirloom-quality pieces deserve heirloom-quality materials that hold their colour, weight, and integrity for generations.
Where is Davidson Jewels located?
Our studio is located at 533 Riverfront Ave SE in Calgary's East Village, just along the Bow River pathway. The space functions as a working goldsmith's atelier rather than a retail showroom, so you'll meet Ian directly and see the bench where your ring will be made. Free street parking is available nearby.
Do I need an appointment?
Yes — Davidson Jewels operates by appointment only so Ian can give every client his undivided attention. Initial consultations are complimentary and typically last about an hour. You can book directly through our online scheduling page at a time that works for you.
