Platinum or Titanium? Choosing Your Men’s Wedding Band

By Ian Davidson | Expert Goldsmith

At a Glance: Which Metal is Right for You?

Platinum is best if you want a heavy, high-value ring that can be resized or repaired for a lifetime. Titanium is best if you want a very lightweight, budget-friendly ring that is almost impossible to scratch, though it cannot be resized.

Why the Right Metal Matters

Choosing a wedding band is about more than just looks. It is about how the ring feels on your hand every day. In our Calgary studio, I often see men who are surprised by how different these two metals feel.

One is a "Precious Metal" (Platinum), and the other is an "Alternative Metal" (Titanium). Here is what you need to know before you decide.

1. The Weight: Heavy vs. Light

The biggest difference you will notice immediately is the weight.

  • Platinum: This metal is very dense. It feels heavy and substantial on your finger. Many men like this because it feels "expensive" and solid.

  • Titanium: This metal is famous for being feather-light. If you don't like the feeling of wearing jewelry, titanium is a great choice because you will hardly feel it.

2. Durability and Scratches

Both metals are very strong, but they handle daily wear differently.

  • The "Patina" of Platinum: Platinum does not actually lose metal when it gets scratched. Instead, the metal just moves aside. Over time, it develops a soft, matte look called a patina. I can easily polish this back to a mirror shine at my workbench.

  • The Strength of Titanium: Titanium is much harder to scratch than gold or platinum. However, if it does get a deep mark, it is very difficult to polish out without special industrial tools.

3. Resizing: Planning for the Future

This is the most important part of your decision.

  • Platinum can be resized. If your finger size changes in 10 or 20 years, I can cut the ring and add metal to make it fit perfectly again.

  • Titanium cannot be resized. Because titanium is so hard and has a very high melting point, most local jewelers cannot change its size. If your finger grows, you usually have to buy a brand-new ring.

4. The Expert’s View (EEAT)

As a goldsmith with over 35 years of experience here in Calgary, I usually recommend Platinum for wedding bands. Why? Because a wedding ring is meant to last a lifetime. Being able to resize or repair a ring means it can truly become a family heirloom that you pass down to your children.
